Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez are scheduled to meet in a junior middleweight title bout on September 14, 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in LV. The boxing fight will unify the WBA Super World light middleweight belt and the WBC light middleweight belt, and will be contested at a catchweight of 152 pounds.

Both fighters enter having not suffered a defeat in their careers. Floyd Mayweather is a perfect 44-0-0, while Alvarez is 42-0-1. This will be the first time Mayweather is fighting an unbeaten opponent since his knockout of Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8, 2007. Alvarez is fighting his second consecutive bout against an unbeaten fighter, having handed Austin Trout his first career loss in April.

This is the second fight in Mayweather's six-fight deal with Showtime, which will broadcast the fight on pay-per-view.

CANELO ALVAREZ vs. JOSESITO LOPEZ - September 15, 2012

One of the advantages Canelo will have on his side Saturday night is size. A Light Middleweight, Canelo typically fights at 154 pounds, Floyd at 147 (for this fight, they meet in the middle at 152). As such, it's instructive to take a look at Canelo's 2012 outing against another smaller opponent - Josesito Lopez. Now, right off the bat, two things must be said. First, Mayweather will be smaller, but the size differential won't be as great as in the Lopez fight. Second, Josesito Lopez is a very good fighter, but there is a chasm of talent separating him from Mayweather.

That said, this is still a fight that should be watched to show one of Canelo's potential key weapons against Mayweather: the body shot.

Floyd Mayweather Jr:

Record:  44 W   0 L   0 D   26 KOs]
Alias: Money
Weightclass: Jr Middleweight
Stance: Orthodox
Style: Boxer
Height: 5'8"
Reach: 72"
Nationality: Grand Rapids, MI, USA
Date of Birth: February 24th, 1977

Mayweather, the pound-for-pound king, retained his title for the first time with a one-sided distance beatdown of interim titlist Robert Guerrero on May 4 in the first fight of his mega pay-per-view deal with Showtime/CBS. Mayweather is 36, and many believed he was beginning to slip after his previous fight, a May 2012 win against Miguel Cotto, because he took more punches than ever before. But against Guerrero, and with his defensive-minded father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., back as his trainer for the first time since 2000, Mayweather looked as good as he has in years. There will be no long layoff this time either, as Mayweather, who also holds a junior middleweight belt, will be back in action very quickly by his standards after making a deal to face 22-year-old Mexican star and junior middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at 152 pounds. This is easily the biggest fight of the year.

Saul Alvarez:

Record:  42 W   0 L   1 D   30 KOs
Alias: Canelo
Weightclass: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
Style: Boxer
Height: 5'9"
Reach: 71"
Nationality: Guadalajara, JAL, Mexico
Date of Birth: July 18th, 1990

By outpointing Austin Trout in a title unification fight before some 40,000 fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio to lay claim as the legitimate division champion, Alvarez proved he can compete with the very best. With that win secured and a tough deal ironed out, Alvarez is moving on to the biggest fight that can be made in boxing today, a much-anticipated showdown (at 152 pounds) with fellow champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0) on Mexican Independence Day weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This is a big one, folks.

Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez Fight

Mayweather enters the fight as the favorite, as Alvarez doesn’t have the big-bout experience that Money does. As B/R’s Kevin McRae recently wrote, “But for Canelo Alvarez, the moment is less one to get lost in, and more an opportunity to be seized.” Not that Alvarez is expected to be star struck, but he needs to be mentally prepared.

Boxing Fight Card:
 Floyd Mayweather Jr (44 W 0 L 0 D 26 KOs) vs Canelo Alvarez (42 W 0 L 1 D 30 KOs) -  WBA WBC Light Middleweight Title

Lucas Martin Matthysse (34 W 2 L 0 D 32 KOs) vs Danny Garcia (26 W 0 L 0 D 16 KOS) -  Light Welterweight

Ishe Smith (25 W 5 L 0 D 11 KOs) vs Carlos Molina (21 W 5 L 2 D 6 KOs) -  IBF Light Middleweight Title

Ashley Theophane (33 W 5 L 1 D 10 KOs) vs Pablo Cesar Cano (26 W 3 L 1 D 20 KOs) -  Welterweight

The bout between Mayweather and Alvarez isn’t going to go a couple of rounds. They’ll likely leave it to the judges to decide the winner and loser. If Mayweather can come out early and land a few hard punches Alvarez’s way, that could set the tone for the rest of the match. If Mayweather is forced to play defense all fight long, it could be Alvarez who comes out on top.

While we don’t know exactly how the fight is going to play out on Sept. 14, we do know that it’s going to be one of the best of 2013. Each boxer has a lot to win, as well as a lot to lose. Make sure that you’re one of the people who help set more viewing records for the bout, as this is one you cannot afford to miss.
